More about Oyster Perpetual Bubble Back 14K Rose Gold
This is a vintage c. 1940 14K rose gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bubbleback, 3131. It has a leather strap with a rose gold tang buckle, a super Oyster crown, and an acrylic crystal. The 32mm diameter curved bezel, circular dial, tonneau-shaped Oyster case, and downturned lugs are polished, as is the coin-edged half-dome-shaped "bubble" screwed down case back and crown. The dial is silver with a beautiful patina, with rose gold applied Roman numeral and baton hour index markers, and an outer minute/seconds track. It includes a Certified Swiss Official Chronometer (COSC) certification. It has gold alpha hands and a blued sweep seconds hand. The movement is signed "Rolex Perpetual Chronometer," and the 13mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. The automatic self-winding Rolex movement is rhodium-plated. It's constructed with 18 jewels, a shock absorber mechanism, a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance, and a self-compensating flat balance spring. Rolex debuted the first bubbleback in 1933, which featured the first auto-rotor. Rather than making the watch larger, Rolex invented the half-domed case back to accommodate the thicker rotor mechanism. In English it was designated “Bubbleback,” and the Italians named it the "ovettone" or “Little Egg.” The first two-piece case debuted with model 3131 in 1936. Rolex produced the auto-rotor mechanism based on the Aegler movement in hunter watches featuring a “perpetual motion” winding mass. They patented their first perpetually self-winding wristwatch in 1932, introducing the Bubbleback a year later.
