More about Rare Tri Compax 18K Rose Gold

This is a vintage c. 1950 18K rose gold Universal Geneve Tri Compax 12296. It includes a leather strap with a rose gold tang buckle, and an acrylic crystal. It has a solid snap on case back engraved inside with the serial number and reference number along with the Universal Geneve hallmark. It includes a signed pull-out winding crown, and rectangular chronograph pushbuttons. There are twin correctors in the left-side case band at 10 o'clock for the calendar, and a third is at the 7 o'clock position. The 37.5mm diameter solid round 3-body case, sharp condition downturned lugs, and flat angled bezel are polished. The fresh original dial is silver with applied rose gold stick baton hour markers, gold feuille leaf-shaped hands, and a blued center sweep chronograph seconds hand with a spade-shaped counterbalance. It has a black outer minute track with Arabic numeral markers every five seconds to 60, with a 1/5 seconds track, and a perimeter blue tachymeter scale to 1000 UPH. There are four recessed silver subsidiary dials with concentric circle guilloche patterns, and black Arabic numerals and markers with blued indicator hands, including a small constant running seconds register 9 o'clock, a 12-hour chronograph totalizer at 6 o'clock, and a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o'clock. A color moon phase dial is at the 12 o'clock position with a radial date chapter ring and a red indicator hand. The moon phase is braced by twin rectangular French calendar disc apertures for the day of the week and the month. The 13mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Universal Geneve Tri Compax 12296 has a mechanical manual winding Universal Geneve caliber 481 (base Universal Geneve caliber 281) column wheel chronograph movement. It's rhodium-plated, and it's constructed with 17 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance, a blued steel Breguet balance spring, and an index regulator. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vph (2.5Hz). The Universal Geneve Tri Compax 12296 was introduced in 1936 and this moon phase was produced c. 1950.
