More about Vintage Type XX French Air Force Flyback Chronograph

This is a vintage c. 1954 J. Auricoste Type 20 French Air Force Fly back Chronograph, reference 5.099-54. It has a leather strap with a stainless steel tang buckle, and an acrylic crystal. There is a screw-down solid case back engraved with all the appropriate hallmarks and serial number that indicate the watch was serviced 4 times while it was commissioned as a military watch. Inside the jeweled case is "FOND – Acier Inoxydable (Bottom – Stainless Steel)." It has round chronograph pushbuttons for the "retour en vol" (flyback) function. The 38mm diameter solid three-body case, downturned lugs, and stepped unidirectional rotating serrated bezel are polished/brushed. The dial is black with radium-coated Arabic numeral hour markers and baton hands. There is a center sweep chronograph hand, and an outer railway-style 60-minute/one-fifth second track with Arabic numerals every five minutes. There are twin subsidiary dials including a small constant seconds dial at 9 o'clock, and a 30-minute totalizer dial at 3 o'clock. The 15mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. The mechanical manual winding Auricost caliber 2040 (Lemania 15TL) movement is rhodium plated. It's constructed with 17 jewels, an Incabloc shock device, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a monometallic balance, a swan neck regulator, and a self-compensating Breguet balance spring The J. Auricoste Type 20 French Air Force Fly back Chronograph, reference 5.099-54 was issued to the French Air Force, beginning in 1954. These chronographs were state property and only issued to pilots on missions from 1954 to about 1960. The fly back feature function is activated by pressing and resetting the lower chronograph pusher of the already moving chronograph hand to allow the simple measuring of consecutive time intervals, especially useful for pilots.
