More about Vintage Tri-Compax SS

This is a vintage c. 1945 stainless steel Universal Geneve Tri Compax, reference 22242. It has a leather strap with a stainless steel tang buckle, and an acrylic crystal. It has a snap-on solid case back engraved with the reference and serial numbers, and with the Universal "Enversteel" stamp on the machine jeweled inside. It has rectangular chronograph pushbuttons. The 35mm diameter solid three-body case, downturned lugs, and angled bezel are polished/brushed. The original silver dial has painted luminous Arabic numerals at 4,6,8, and 10 o'clock, dot index hour markers, luminous blued steel sword hands, and a blued center sweep chronograph hand. There is a 60 minute/one-fifth second track with Arabic numerals ever five minutes, and around the perimeter is a blue tachymeter scale to 1000 UPH. There is a day aperture window at 10 o'clock, and a month window at 2 o'clock. There are three recessed subsidiary dials, including a small constant seconds dial at 9 o'clock, a 12-hour register at 6 o'clock, and a 30-minute sub dial at 3 o'clock. A date scale surrounds the moon phase dial at twelve o'clock. The 13.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. The mechanical manual winding Universal caliber 481 movement is rhodium-plated. It's constructed with 17 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance, and a self-compensating Breguet balance spring. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vph.
