More about Rare Vintage "Greenlander" WWW RAF Circa 1945

This is a rare vintage 1945 stainless steel Longines Greenlander WWW RAF 23088. It has a British green nylon fabric strap with a stainless steel tang buckle, and an acrylic "Perspex" crystal. There is a screw-down solid case back engraved with " W.W.W (Watch Wristlet Waterproof)," the reference number "23088," and the civil and military serial numbers. The last 3 digits of this military number are also stamped on one lug. Longines produced these for the British Ministry of Defense from May to December 1945. Inside the case back is engraved "WWW – the reference number 23088, and the RAF arrow insignia that is also on the dial. The 37mm diameter two-body case, downturned lugs, fixed bars, and stepped bezel are polished. The dial is matte black with luminous radium-coated Arabic numerals, and aged radium dot and baton hour markers around a railway-style minute track. It has skeletonized pear-shaped hands with radium inserts. There is a round running seconds subsidiary dial at the 6 o'clock position. It was originally water resistant to 30 meters/100 feet, and the 11mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. The mechanical manual winding Longines Caliber 12.68Z movement is gilt brass. It's constructed with 15 jewels, an anti-shock system (only Longines added that to their RAF watches – other watch makers who provided for the military did include it), and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes an anti-magnetic monometallic balance, a self-compensating Breguet balance spring, and a micrometer regulator. The Longines Greenlander WWW RAF 23088 received its nickname because it was issued to the British North Greenland Expedition in the 1950s.
