This is a vintage c. 1955 stainless steel Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Aqualung 1000FT 2462. It has a period correct tropic composite rubber strap with a stainless steel tang buckle, and a Plexiglas crystal. It has the original screw-down winding crown, and a solid anti-magnetic case back secured with a screw-down ring, inside of which is engraved "BLANCPAIN – AQUALUNG - ANTIMAGNETIC – WATER PROOF – SHOCK PROTECTED – ROTOMATIC – 2462 – STAINLESS STEEL – SWISS MADE." The 41mm diameter solid four-body case, downturned lugs, and bezel are polished/brushed. It has an extra wide graduated bidirectional revolving black Bakelite bezel with luminous stick markers, quarter-hour Arabic numerals, and a diamond maker at 12 o'clock. The original radium dial is gloss black with applied luminous Arabic numeral quarter-hour markers and baton indices. It has the original luminous steel baton hands with aging that matches the markers, a center sweep seconds hand with an arrow tip, and a perimeter minute/seconds scale. It's water resistant to 300 meters/1000 feet, and the 14mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Aqualung 1000FT 2462 has an automatic self-winding Blancpain caliber military specification R.570 movement. It's rhodium-plated, and it's constructed with 17 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, and a shock absorber device. It includes a monometallic balance, a blued steel flat balance-spring, an index regulator, and a signed rotor. The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Aqualung 1000FT 2462, referred to as the "life saver," due to its wide bezel, was introduced in the mid 1950's. It was originally requested for the French Ministry of Defense for the elite UDT "nageurs de combat" teams.
