More about Vintage A. Cairelli Italian Air Force (A.M.I) Chronograph SS

This is a vintage c. 1960's stainless steel Zenith A. Cairelli Italian Air Force (A.M.I) Chronograph, reference CP-2. It has a shell cordovan strap with a stainless steel tang buckle, and a domed acrylic crystal. There is a screw-down solid case back engraved with "A.M.I. – Chronometro – TIPO CP-2," and the serial number making it an issued military watch. It has an anti-magnetic soft iron dust cap, round chronograph buttons, and a reeded graduated 60-minute bi-directional revolving black bezel with even "ghost" fading. The 43mm diameter solid three-body case, downturned lapidated lugs, and bezel are polished/brushed. The original black dial has luminous painted Arabic hour markers, luminous steel baton hands, and an arrow tipped center sweep chronograph second hand. There is a perimeter minute/one-fifth second track with Arabic numerals every five divisions to 60, and twin subsidiary dials including a small constant seconds dial at the 9 o'clock position, and a 30-minute register at 3 o'clock. The 14mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed, with "A. Cairelli – Roma" on the dial. The mechanical manual winding Zenith caliber 146DP movement is rhodium-plated. It's constructed with 17 jewels, a shock absorber device, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a monometallic balance, and a self-compensating flat balance spring. This Zenith A. Cairelli Italian Air Force (A.M.I) Chronograph, reference CP-2, had a production of c. 2500 examples, with many not being issued. CP stands for Chronometro da Polso (bracelet stopwatch). A. Cairelli was a large Roman retailer of watches, clocks, and other instruments who supplied the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana) with the CP-2's, which were originally made by Universal Genève, and then Zenith.
