More about Calatrava 2552 Automatic 'DISCO VOLANTE' 18K Yellow Gold
This is a vintage c. 1950's 18k yellow gold Patek Philippe Calatrava "DISCO VOLANTE" 2552. It has an alligator leather strap with an 18K yellow gold buckle, the original rare recessed "Double-P" winding crown, and a low-domed acrylic crystal. There is a screw-down solid case back, inside of which is engraved "Patek Philippe – Geneve," the reference number, and gold hallmarks. The 36mm diameter solid two-body case, downturned lugs, and stepped bezel are polished and brushed. The silver dial has applied gold faceted baton hour markers. The Dauphine hands are gold, and there is a perimeter dot minute track. There is a constant seconds subsidiary dial at the 6 o'clock position, and the 10.3mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. The mechanical automatic self-winding Patek Philippe caliber 12-600 AT movement, is stamped twice with the seal of Geneva quality mark, and the Patek Philippe seal as well. It's rhodium-plated with fausses cotes decoration, and it's constructed with 30 jewels, a shock absorber mechanism, and a straight- line lever escapement. It has a Gyromax balance that's adjusted for heat, cold, isochronism and 5 positions. It includes a self-compensating Breguet balance spring, a swan-neck micrometer regulator, and an 18k gold rotor with engine turned engraving that winds in either direction for the ultimate efficiency. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 19,800 vph This Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 2552 was affectionately named the "Disco Volante" or Flying Saucer because it resembled the UFO sightings in the 1950's with its large round, flat shape and stepped bezel.
