 | 9696 Shell Cordovan Straps, available at our store in various sizes and all colors.
The practice for producing the illustrious shell cordovan leather material originated in Cordoba (also known as Cordova), Spain. The process by which shell cordovan leather is produced, is centuries old and so special that it simply cannot be replicated by modern machinery, it can only be worked by hand. Shell cordovan leather must be made from the skin of a horse's posterior to be shell cordovan. The shells are put through a natural, vegetable tanning process, then hand-stained, glazed, and finished over a six-month period that demands the measured pace of craftsmanship and patience. It shines beautifully and develops an even better patina with wear and polishing. Shell cordovan is extremely rare and is known as leather with character. There are only two tanneries in the world that produce shell cordovan leather, one of them being the Horween Leather Company in Chicago.
