More about Vintage GMT Master Bakelight WOW

This Rolex GMT Master 6542 has a mechanical automatic self-winding Rolex caliber 1030 movement. It's rhodium-plated with fausses cotes embellishment. It's constructed with 25 jewels, an Incabloc shock absorber device, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a monometallic balance that's adjusted to temperatures and 5 positions, a self - compensating Breguet balance spring, an index regulator, and a “Butterfly” rotor. The Rolex GMT Master 6542 was introduced in 1954, intended to be a pilot’s watch. The first GMT models had a transparent acrylic bezel insert with 24-hour graduations printed on its underside. The numbers were luminous tritium that became contaminated with Strontium 90. The Bakelite bezels were made between 1956 and 1959, and although non-radioactive, they proved to lack flexibility and were susceptible to cracking and fading. They were phased out so that the more common metal bezels with screen-printed numbers began appearing in 1956. The Bakelite bezel in excellent condition is extremely rare. This watch was made originally for Pan-Am pilots, hence the red and blue bezel was nicknamed "Pepsi."
