More about Vintage Aero Compax SS

This is a vintage c. 1942 Universal Geneve Aero Compax, reference 22477. It is on a Gay Freres style stains steel bracelet and has an acrylic crystal. There is a snap-on solid case back engraved with the serial and reference numbers; the inside is engine tooled with the Universal Geneve Hallmark. It has rectangular chronograph pushbuttons and a large winding crown; it's a full-featured pilot’s watch with a column wheel chronograph and a GMT second time zone, which is controlled by the winding crown at 9 o'clock. The 36mm diameter solid three-body case, downturned lugs, and angled bezel are polished. The original silver dial has painted once-luminous gold baton hour markers around a minute/60-second scale with Arabic numerals every five seconds. It has blued epee hands and a center sweep chronograph hand. The perimeter has a tachymeter scale to 1000 UPH. There are four recessed subsidiary dials with blued hands, including a reminder dial at 12 o'clock (which is not connected to the movement but can be set from the crown at 9 o'clock), a constant seconds indicator at 9 o'clock, a 12-hour totalizer at 6 o'clock, and a 30-minute register at 3 o'clock. The 13.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. The mechanical manual winding Universal Geneve caliber 287 movement is gilt. The column wheel design has an oscillating pinion that activates the chronograph. It's constructed with 17 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, and a monometallic balance that's adjusted to 5 positions. It includes a self-compensating Breguet balance spring, and an index regulator. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vph. The Universal Geneve Aero Compax, reference 22477, was introduced in late 1940 and was produced until 1949. Universal Genève was a leader in chronographs in the 1940's, building for watchmakers such as Zenith and Girard-Perregaux.
