More about Fifty Fathoms "BUNDESWEHR" NO RADIATION w/ Original Pictures

This is a vintage stainless steel Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Aqualung BUND NO RADIATION. It has an acrylic crystal, and a screwed-down solid case back and winding crown. The 41mm diameter case, reeded bi-directional rotating bezel, and downturned lugs are un-polished in excellent condition with the original sharp edges. The rare two-piece caseback is engraved with BUNDESWEHR and the stock number. The graduated black Bakelite bezel has Arabic numeral markers and hash marks for dive times. The dial is glossy black with Tritium-coated round, baton, and diamond hour markers. There is a center sweep second hand with an arrow tip, and an outer minute/second track. Radium use was discontinued in the 1960s for safety reasons, hence the No Radiation symbol is at the 6 o'clock position. It's water resistant to 1000 feet, and the 13.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. In 1952, the French "Nageuers de combat" (combat swimmers) was formed as an elite team - the NAVY Seals of France. The Fifty Fathoms watch was designed for military use and low light military situations, especially diving. Blanpain used radioactive materials such as Promethium 147 to illuminate the watch dials. To separate the civilian watches from the military that were radioactive, Blancpain moved to using Tritium, marked with the triple triangle red and yellow radiation logo beginning in 1965.
