More about Breitling 809 Vintage Cosmonaute Navitimer 809 Stunning Patina

This is a vintage c. 1961 stainless steel Breitling Navitimer "ALL BLACK" AOPA 806. It has a leather strap with a stainless steel tang buckle, a domed acrylic crystal. It includes round "mushroom" chronograph pushbuttons. The 40mm diameter solid three-body case, revolving reeded slide rule bezel, lapidated downturned lugs, and solid case back are polished/brushed, and in excellent condition. The dial is black with luminous radium Arabic numeral hour markers, pointed steel baton hands with luminous inserts, and a center sweep chronograph seconds hand with a luminous arrow tip. It includes the gilt AOPA wings emblem and "Navitimer." There are outer graduations for the minutes, the tachymeter, the telemeter, and the slide-rule. It includes three silver subsidiary dials with white markers, Arabic numerals, and indicator hands, including a constant running seconds dial at the 9 o'clock position, a 12-hour chronograph totalizer at 6 o'clock, and there is a 30-minute totalizer at 3 o'clock. It has a 45-hour power reserve at full winding, and the 12mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed.

This Breitling Navitimer "ALL BLACK" AOPA 806 has a mechanical manual winding Breitling Venus caliber 178 (based on the Valjoux 7736) column wheel chronograph movement that's copper-coated, with a shock absorber mechanism. It includes the "WOG" US import code stamp, and it's constructed with 17 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, and a monometallic balance that's adjusted to temperature and 5 positions. It includes a self-compensating flat balance spring, and the mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vph (2.5 Hz).

The Breitling Navitimer "ALL BLACK" AOPA 806 was introduced c. 1952, with the gold logo of the AOPA - the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association - on the dial.
