More about Golden Ellipse 18K Yellow Gold Blue Dial

This is the distinctive Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 3738J. The Caliber 240 ultra-thin mechanical self-winding movement has 27 jewels, 161 parts, a Gyromax balance wheel, and it oscillates at 21,600 vibrations per hour. It has a 22K gold off-center mini-rotor and a maximum power reserve of 48 hours. The dial is sunburst blue with gold applied hour markers, and it's water resistant to 30m. The functions are hours and minutes, and the elegant simplicity is enhanced by the lack of a second hand. The crocodile leather strap has an 18K yellow gold buckle and the case is wafer-thin at 6mm. It's produced in white, yellow, and rose gold, with variant dials of brown and anthracite sunburst. Some identify the inspiration for the blue dial as dark Egyptian Faience, and others theorize that it's German or Delft blue enamel. The ellipse shape is a hybrid form between the rectangle and the circle, engineered by Hippasus of Metapontum, the Greek mathematician who discovered the rule of the golden section around 450 B.C. This watch was first introduced by Patek in 1968 and it was discontinued/replaced in 2008 with a slightly larger case and a different movement, as the 5738; that year the Golden Ellipse had its 40th anniversary, making the line the second oldest by Patek Philippe next to the Calatrava. This is one of Patek Philippe's most recognizable flagship timepieces.
