More about Vintage Memovox Polaris TROPICAL E859
This is a vintage stainless steel Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Polaris E859. It has the patented Piquerez Compressor system - a triple back consisting of a bronze inner case that provided the resonance of the alarm, a waterproof back, and a snap-on outer back with 16 holes to transmit the sound. It includes a center sweep seconds hand with a luminous arrow tip, and an inner bi-directional revolving bezel calibrated for 60 minutes, and operated by the central crown. The crown at 2 activates the central revolving alarm dial; all three crowns are original. The 41.5mm diameter solid sharp two-body case, chamfered bezel and downturned lugs are polished. The black dial has faded to a gorgeous tropical brown with luminous dart baton index markers, luminous steel baton hands, and Arabic numerals at three of the quarter hours. It has an inner bi-directional revolving disk with minute divisions for the alarm, and outer dot minute divisions with 5-minute/ seconds markers. There is a date aperture window at the 3 o'clock position, and the 17.2mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Polaris E859 has a mechanical automatic self-winding Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 825 movement that's rhodium-plated, with fausses cotes embellishment. It's constructed with 17 jewels, 241 components, and a straight-line lever escapement. It is equipped with a hammer rotor, a monometallic balance that's adjusted for temperature and 5 positions, and a shock absorber mechanism. It includes a self-compensating flat balance spring, and an index regulator. 1714 examples of the Memovox Polaris, were made between 1965 and 1970; it is Jaeger-LeCoultre's best-known diving watch. In 1966 it was fitted with a new system to increase the volume of the alarm under water - a triple case back that prevented the sound from being damped by the diver’s rubber suit. This Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Polaris E859, manufactured c. 1968, was fitted with the patented Compressor triple back. Jaeger-LeCoultre alarm watches still use a similar alarm system.
