More about IWC IW500901 Big Pilot SS / Alligator

This is a stainless steel IWC Big Pilot, IW500901. It has an alligator leather strap with a stainless steel double deployant buckle, and a scratch resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating that's secured against displacement by any large drops in air pressure. It has a solid case back and a pilot-style screw-down winding crown. The 46mm diameter solid two-body case, downturned lugs, and narrow cupped bezel are polished/brushed. The dial is black with large luminous white Arabic numeral hour markers, and baton/triangular indexes. There is a minute and second track around the perimeter, with a center sweep seconds hand. There is a date aperture window at the six o'clock position, and a subsidiary 7-day power reserve indicator dial is at 3 o'clock. The stainless-steel body encloses an anti-magnetic soft iron inner case. It's water resistant to 60 meters/195 feet, and the 15.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed.

The mechanical automatic self-winding Pellaton-Pawl 51111 movement is rhodium-plated, with oeil-de-perdrix embellishment. It's constructed with 42 jewels, a shock absorber mechanism, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a Glucydur beryllium alloy balance with high-precision adjustment cam on balance arms, and a self-compensating Breguet flat balance spring. It has a bidirectional rotor engraved "IWC - Probus Scafusia - Seven (7) Days Power Reserve," and a hacking seconds mechanism.

IWC's Big Pilot watch from 1940 still directly influences the design of this generation. The caliber 51111 movement is also the largest automatic movement ever made by IWC.
