More about 6238 'Pre Daytona' SS Silver Dial / Bracelet
This is a vintage c. 1965 stainless steel Rolex "Pre Daytona" 6238. It has an integral USA stainless steel link rivet bracelet that's stamped 7 – 68, and an acrylic crystal. It has round "pump" chronograph push buttons, a screw-down winding crown, and there is a solid screw down case back, inside of which is engraved " MONTRES ROLEX S.A. – GENEVA SWITZERLAND – PATENTED – STAINLESS STEEL – 6238." THE 36.5mm diameter solid three-body case, gently curved thick lugs, bracelet, and flat angled bezel, are polished/brushed. The original dial is sunburst silver with applied faceted steel baton hour markers, and luminous tritium pips around an outer black minute/one-fifth second scale. The tritium on the dial and hands is original and unaltered. It has a perimeter black tachymeter ring to 1000 UPH, the original steel baton hands with luminous inserts, and a center sweep chronograph seconds hand with an arrow tip. There are three "pie plate" guilloche silver subsidiary dials with black markers, Arabic numerals, and steel indicator hands, including a running small seconds register at 9 o'clock, a 12-hour chronograph totalizer at 6 o'clock, and there is a 30-minute chronograph totalizer at the 3 o'clock position. It has a 48-hour power reserve at full wind, and the 13.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Rolex "Pre Daytona" 6238 has a mechanical manual winding caliber Rolex 722-1 (Valjoux 72 B) column wheel chronograph movement. It's rhodium-plated, with fausses cotes embellishment, and it's constructed with 17 jewels, a KIF-Flector anti-shock device, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a monometallic balance that's adjusted to three positions, a self-compensating free-sprung Breguet balance spring, and Microstella regulating screws. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vph (2.5 Hz). This Rolex "Pre Daytona" 6238 was introduced in 1961, and was the last watch to have the tachymeter inside on the dial rather than on it (this changed with the 6239).
