More about Vintage Explorer I Matte Circa 1978 GREAT PATINA

This is a vintage c. 1978 stainless steel Rolex Explorer I 1016. It has the correct 78360 Oyster bracelet and 580 end links with a folding deployant clasp, and an acrylic crystal. It has the original screw down Twinlock winding crown, and a solid screw down case back. The 36mm diameter solid three-body case, gently curved lugs, bracelet, and flat bezel, are polished/satin finished. It has the original matte black dial, luminous skeleton steel Rolex hands with a gorgeous evenly-aged patina, and a center sweep seconds hand with a "lollipop" indicator. There are Arabic hour numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, luminous baton markers with a triangle indicator at 12 o'clock, and there is a perimeter outer track with seconds/minute divisions. It's water resistant to 30 meters/100 feet, and it's a Certified Official Superlative Chronometer (COSC). The case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Rolex Explorer I 1016 has a mechanical automatic winding Rolex caliber 1570 movement that's rhodium-plated, and it's constructed with 26 jewels, a shock absorber device, a straight-line lever escapement, and a monometallic balance adjusted to heat, cold, and five positions. It includes a self-compensating free-sprung Breguet balance spring, a central hacking seconds device for precision time setting, and Microstella regulating screws. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 19,800 vph (2.75 Hz). The Rolex Explorer I 1016 was introduced in 1963, and it was produced until 1989. The Rolex Explorer was originally introduced in 1953, becoming the standard timepiece for adventurers, including mountain climber Sir Edmund Hillary, who scaled Mount Everest with his Tibetan comrade, Tenzing Norgay. They both wore an Oyster Perpetual to the summit, prompting Rolex to produce and debut their Explorer in commemoration of the conquest of Everest.
