More about Mathey-Tissot 22081 Vintage Civilian Type XX Pilot Flyback Chronograph

This is a vintage stainless steel c. 1950's Breguet Pilot Fly back Triple Register Chronograph, reference Type XX. It has a shell cordovan leather strap with steel tang buckle, and an acrylic crystal. There is a screw-down solid numbered case back with an anti-magnetic dust cap, and round "retour en vol" chronograph pushbuttons, which facilitate the instantaneous fly-back feature of the chronograph. A single push on the button at 4 o'clock returns the chronograph hand to zero while the watch is still in motion, and then restarts it immediately. The 38mm diameter solid three-body case, downturned lugs, and angled knurled bezel are polished/brushed. The rotating bezel is engraved with black Arabic numerals, with 12-hour graduations. The dial is black with painted luminous Arabic numeral hour markers and baton indices around a perimeter minute scale. It has luminous baton hands with needle tips, and a center chronograph sweep hand with a luminous pointer tip. There is a 60-minute subsidiary dial at 9 o'clock, a 12-hour dial is at 6 o'clock, and a constant seconds dial at 3 o'clock with a luminous hand and baton indices. It has a power-reserve of 40-hours at full wind, and the 13.5mm case, dial, and movement are all signed.

The mechanical manual winding Valjoux caliber 720 column-wheel chronograph movement, is rhodium-plated. It's constructed with 17 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, and a monometallic balance. It includes a self-compensating Breguet balance spring, and an index regulator. The mechanism oscillates at 18,000 vph.

This Breguet Pilot Flyback Triple Register Chronograph, reference Type XX, is the civilian version of the military watch issued to the French Air Force in the mid 1950's.
