Since its release in 1993, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore has always been the black sheep of the AP family - the punk rock, rebellious cousin to the more distinguished and respectable classic Royal Oak. Eschewing designer Gerald Genta's devotion to slenderness and ergonomics, the first Offshore was a gigantic (at the time) 42mm that caused considerable controversy upon release. The traditional watchmaking world hated it. Critics called it "The Beast," and even Genta himself is said to have stormed the brand's booth at a show, exclaiming: "You have spoiled my watch!"

The Offshore's origins began with Cigarette Offshore Powerboat racing, a sport that was gaining traction in the early ‘90s, giving some insight into its countercultural provenance. The Offshore has remained somewhat of an outsider in the watch scene ever since, as evidenced by its popularity with extreme sport athletes, Hollywood action stars and hip-hop royalty alike. Jay-Z namechecked Audemars Piguet in multiple songs before collaborating with the brand on a 100-piece limited edition Offshore in 2005, credited as one of the first real celebrity watch collaborations in the industry. The last three decades have seen it stay true to its roots, rarely dipping below 42mm “Beast” dimensions and always keeping the bold colors, sharp chunky lines, and rubberized crown and rubber straps it has become known for.

Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph 42mm

Audemars Piguet recently announced nine new additions to the Offshore family, featuring some colorful summer vibes and the rare appearance of three smaller variants. There are six chronographs and three divers, starting with the three new standard 42mm chronographs, which all feature the Offshore's signature tapisserie dial and a cool new color-coding system applied to the chronograph complication. Each model has one dedicated color used across all chronograph-related hands and the start/stop pusher, offering a quick visual cheat for distinguishing chronograph functions from standard timekeeping.

All three of the 42mm models are powered by the Calibre 4404, AP's in-house integrated flyback chronograph movement. Incorporating 433 parts and beating at 28,800vph, the movement features a 70-hour power reserve and combines a vertical clutch with a column-wheel mechanism for a buttery smooth chronograph action. Two of the 42mm models come in stainless steel: a black dial with pink accents, and a silver dial with orange accents. The third is in full titanium, with a dark grey dial and turquoise and yellow accents. One caveat worth noting is that the water resistance on all three sits at a modest 100 meters, perhaps less than you might expect from watches with such an aquatic theme.

The remaining three new Offshore chronographs arrive in a much smaller 37mm, a size that opens the collection up to a much broader range of wrists, and they all lean even harder into the colorful summer aesthetic. Two come in titanium: a bright all-turquoise dial with a plain bezel, and a vivid pink dial with 32 brilliant-cut diamonds set around the bezel. The third also has 32 diamonds on the bezel, and offers a light blue dial in an 18-carat pink gold case. There is something for everyone here, from the understated to the unabashedly blingy.

All three 37mm models are powered by the newly announced Calibre 6401, which shares the column-wheel and vertical clutch setup of the larger 4404, but drops the flyback function and trims the power reserve by 15 hours to a still-respectable 55 hours. Notably, these mark the first time a 37mm Offshore has ever been fitted with an in-house movement. The water resistance caveat: the 37mm models reduce the water resistance even further to 50 meters, putting them in worrisome Speedmaster territory. Be careful when washing your hands.

Rounding out the summer Offshore collection are three 42mm stainless steel divers that were introduced earlier in 2026. They bring the same colorful summer vibes as the chronographs, if in a slightly more subdued palette: a black dial with pink accents, a black dial with turquoise accents, and a blue-green dial with white accents and gold indices and hands for a little added visual interest. All three feature the trademark tapisserie dial and rubberized hardware on the dual crowns, one for winding and time setting and the other for rotating the internal bezel. They come on rubber straps, as a dive watch must, and are powered by the Calibre 4308, an in-house 28,800vph automatic movement with a 60-hour power reserve. The divers bump the water resistance back up to where it belongs, at an estimable 300 metres. The pool is now open!

The Royal Oak Offshore Keeps Getting Bolder

Whether you are drawn to the full-titanium flyback chronograph with its sporty color-coded pushers, the diamond-set 37mm in pink gold, or one of the new divers, the summer 2026 collection has something for everyone. Nine references across two distinct watch types, multiple case sizes, and a full spectrum of colorways adds up to even more raffish versatility in the Offshore collection. After more than 30 years, the black sheep of the Audemars Piguet family shows no sign of wanting to fit in, and that’s presumably just the way AP likes it.

The summer 2026 Royal Oak Offshore collection is available now. The divers are priced at $32,900, the 42mm Chronographs are $42,500, and the 37mm chronographs start at $41,100. More info at Audemars Piguet.
