Cartier’s New Special Order (NSO) program gives collectors a rare opportunity to create a watch customized to their specifications. Here’s how it works.

Watch collectors are inherently detail-oriented people, often obsessing over the smallest details in a dial, case, or handset. Some collectors wish for a watch that is an amalgamation of design elements from a variety of references, but it’s rare to have an opportunity to see those changes come to life. The Cartier “New Special Order” (NSO) program gives collectors that opportunity.

But what is the NSO program? Who had access to it? And how does it work today?

How the Cartier NSO Program Works

Cartier is the master of watch design, with a massive catalogue of unique case shapes, dials, materials, and configurations. From the curved Cintrée to the asymmetrical Crash, and everything in between, the allure of a Cartier design is unique in the industry. The NSO program gave the opportunity for collectors to collaborate directly with the maison to make fine adjustments to Cartier’s catalog of pieces.

“Clients were able to pick case material, dial color, hour marker color, hand material, etc. to build the piece of their dreams made to their exact specifications,” said Justin MacDowell, Watch Specialist at European Watch Company, who is also a Cartier aficionado. Under the program, serious collectors who had a relationship with the brand–not just celebrities–could request their own details on foundational Cartier models and watch their dream timepiece emerge. After the request was made, collectors would find out within 2 to 8 weeks if Cartier would consider turning their request into reality.

Perhaps a collector wanted a Tank Louis with a Breguet handset and Breguet numerals, a blue fumé dial Cintrée, a salmon dial Crash, or an Asymétrique with Eastern Arabic indices. These executions, all but impossible with traditional brands, had the possibility of coming to life under the NSO program.

For many years, NSO was largely a quiet niche within passionate Cartier circles, but the program began receiving broader attention during the pandemic, when photos of bespoke commissions began to circulate the web, dealers, and auctions. This propelled a spike in general interest in unique designs from the maison.

The Cartier NSO Process: From Request to Finished Watch

“I requested a Cartier watch made for the EU market and was told they couldn't get it,” said a collector who received a NSO piece from Cartier, who prefers to remain anonymous. “I asked my salesperson about the NSO, and after a month I received the green light to propose the watch”. He explained that the process is largely considered on a case by case basis. “After I finished the design, it was submitted to Cartier for approval. All told, it took around 15 months to receive it.” The result was a unique creation, born from his vision and Cartier’s execution.

Every collector approaches the NSO process with a slightly different lens. To some, it’s a slight tweak to a famous design, to others a more radical overhaul. “My favorite NSO pieces are the ones that are really out there,” said MacDowell. “Things that Cartier would never in a million years put into normal production, like the yellow gold Crash with green dial and cabochon, or the platinum Tank Asymétrique with a black dial with a crazy kind of bullseye pattern”.

Cartier NSO in 2026: How the Program Has Changed

Exciting custom creations have the potential to be a double-edged sword for the brand. While they provide opportunity for truly unique collector desires to come to life, they also run the risk of diluting Cartier’s pure design philosophy. On the other hand, if there were too many NSO pieces with extremely similar designs, it might be perceived to be a production model. Perhaps with these concerns in mind, Cartier recently announced the scaling back of the NSO program to a much smaller set of commissions for VIP clients. By tightening access to the NSO program, Cartier retains greater control of their underlying design ethos. “I understand why they decided to go this direction, but am sad that it likely means there will be fewer wild designs out there for me to drool over!” said MacDowell. The update to the NSO program places even greater exclusivity on the few pieces that still are commissioned today.

While the NSO program may now be producing fewer new examples, the secondary market for NSO bespoke commissions continues to be extremely strong. NSO models are selling at auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars, typically at a strong premium over their production counterparts. Collectors on the preowned market can gain access to extremely rare Cartier pieces otherwise unavailable to the broader market. With the reduction in access to the New Special Order program, we can only expect the existing stock of NSO pieces to become all the more desirable.

Cartier NSO's Legacy: Why These Watches Matter to Collectors

The opportunity to create or own a truly exclusive commission from Cartier, the master of design, is analogous to collaborating with Picasso in the creation of one of his paintings. Collectors are always searching for something unique, different, and personal. The NSO program uniquely achieves this within an industry of standardized production and fixed collections. Giving agency to collectors to bring their own visions to life within an established program speaks volumes about the way Cartier values its customer. More importantly, NSO speaks to the deep love of design, passion for detail, and emphasis on personality that is intrinsic to the practice of watch collecting. It’s why many collectors are passionate about these tiny mechanical objects in the first place.
