When Jean-Claude Biver, one of the most legendary names in the watch industry, announced the creation of his own brand “Biver” in 2023, collectors had high expectations. His appreciation for traditional watchmaking combined with a unique understanding of the watch market has led many brands to success under his leadership, from Swatch Group’s scaling of Blancpain and Omega to his tenures as CEO of TAG Heuer and President of LVMH’s watch division. And with his eponymous brand, Biver has not disappointed - tourbillons, minute repeaters, and more now define the Biver collections.

At the other end of the spectrum, Biver’s Automatique excels in its simplicity. In a 39mm case that’s rendered in rich-toned 18K 3N yellow gold, the JC Biver PRF-12323 is modern in sizing while staying restrained in its elegant design. It features a beautifully brushed and scalloped midcase, polished facets, and modernist lugs, with a dial that is a show in its own right, with a mix of vertically grained and radial finishing, a laser-engraved minute track set in relief to provide three-dimensionality, and finely faceted hands and indexes. Each aspect and detail is intentional and classy, and the result is the right mix of added detail without busying complexity – one of the biggest challenges in the execution of a simple, but not simplistic timepiece.

Powering this stunner is Biver’s JCB.003-C movement, which features a case-matching gold micro-rotor to preserve a thin wrist presence. The movement is elegantly finished in a unique pattern developed by Biver. Simple, but with plenty of unique design language to obsess over, this outstanding piece is a case study of elegant execution. This watch reminds us that to make a difference in the watch industry, sometimes less is more.
