Rockstar: A. Lange & Söhne Cabaret Soiree 868.032
Rockstar
Quietly released in 1997 as A. Lange & Söhne’s first truly rectangular watch, an evolution of the ever-so-slightly rounded Arkade models, the Cabaret brings classic Germanic design details to a Tank-like package. The Cabaret collection, with its beautiful dial and classically Teutonic Lange movement, was made in a variety of iterations, from moonphases to more restrained variants. This Cabaret Soiree, reference 868.032, is undoubtedly the most distinguished and refined iteration available on the market.
Executed in 18k white gold with a Wellendorff bracelet, this spectacular example is a masterclass in gem setting, with a pavé dial, diamond-set bezel, and immaculately set case and bracelet with diamonds in each and every link and delicately adorning the lugs. Nearly every metal surface of this white gold masterpiece is intricately set with diamonds, even extending to the case flanks and lug sides. The diamonds are carefully graduated to fit the contours of the case in a true showcase of Lange’s quiet mastery of the technique.
Diamond-set pieces can sometimes feel overwhelmed by sheer sparkliness, but this piece balances all of the jewels with a sharply contrasting dial, highlighting the iconic outsized date at 12 o’clock, one of the flagship elements of the Lange design ethos. The dial is further complemented by the blued steel handset and a blue inner ring for timekeeping that contrasts nicely with the white gold’s paler complexion.
Many watches from A. Lange & Söhne tend to be relatively reserved, allowing the casebacks to showcase the mastery of their technical craft, with the case and dial remaining tastefully understated. This watch breaks that mold, standing at the intersection of Lange’s watchmaking and fine jewelry execution, and not-so-quietly stating its mastery of both. For lovers of German design, this is one of the most stunning, rare works to ever emerge from the Lange workshops of Glashütte.
