In the world of watch complications, few are as revered as the minute repeater. Exceptionally complex and mastered by only a distinct few watchmakers, the minute repeater represents the pinnacle of what mechanical watchmaking is all about. F.P. Journe’s Répétition Souveraine may arguably be the greatest modern minute repeater ever made.

Rather than replicating traditional minute repeaters, F.P. Journe completely redesigned the traditional minute repeater with wearability, sound clarity, and robustness as his major priorities. First, rather than utilizing a traditional gong, Journe opted for a flat gong system positioned just below the dial surface to create a cleaner and louder sound. Second, Journe rebuilt the striking racks and selection mechanisms of traditional repeaters to slim the watch down even further, achieving a thickness of only 8.5mm. Furthermore, these enhancements were executed while also making the minute repeater less delicate and fragile in use. In a sense, the goal was to democratize the minute repeater as an everyday wearable complication from Journe.

The result is one of the lightest complicated watches in the world, weighing in at just 69.6 grams. Rather than the precious metal of most Journe pieces, the Répétition Souveraine is fashioned from stainless steel for increased sound quality – adding yet another degree of rarity and differentiation to this special timepiece.

Even when relying on the work of past makers, the minute repeater is still one of the most challenging exercises a watchmaker could ever undertake – and few ever do. Yet Journe didn’t accept completion of a minute repeater as the standard for success. Instead, in classic Journe fashion, he started from the ground up and built something unprecedented. Anything less than perfection is failure in the Journe book. In essence, this watch represents Journe’s entire watchmaking philosophy in a sweet-chiming stainless steel case.
