More about Santos 100 SS / 18K Yellow Gold

This is a stainless steel and 18K yellow gold Cartier Santos 100 XL W20072X7. It has a strap with a stainless steel and 18k yellow gold double foldover buckle, and a scratch resistant sapphire crystal. It has a protected winding crown set with a faceted synthetic spinel, and a solid screw-down case back secured with 8 screws. The 38mm by 51mm square shaped solid three-body case, flat lugs, and 18K yellow gold bezel secured by 8 screws are polished/brushed. It has a silver dial with luminous blue oxidized steel sword-shaped hands with luminous inserts, painted radial Roman numeral hour markers, and the secret Cartier signature on the VII. There are minute markers around a square inner ring. It has a centered sweep second hand, a 42-hour power reserve, and it's water resistant to 100 meters/330 feet. The 10.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Cartier Santos 100 XL W20072X7 has a mechanical automatic self-winding Cartier caliber 049 movement that's rhodium-plated, with fausses côtes embellishment. It has a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance adjusted for 5 positions, a shock absorber mechanism, and a self-compensating flat balance spring. In 1904, Louis Cartier was asked by his Brazilian friend and pioneer aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont, to design a wristwatch he could use during his flights instead of a pocket watch. Louis Cartier created the Santos wristwatch for him, which first went on sale in 1911.
