More about IWC IW371491 Portuguese Chronograph SS Blue Dial

This is a stainless steel IWC Portuguese Chronograph IW371491. It has an alligator leather strap with a stainless steel double deployment clasp, and a domed scratch resistant sapphire crystal. It has a pull out winding crown, and round "mushroom" chronograph push buttons. There is a solid case back secured with 4 screws, and it's engraved with "INTERNATIONAL WATCH CO.," and a serial number. The 40mm diameter solid three-body case, curved lugs, and thin rounded bezel, are polished. It has blued dauphine hands, and a center sweep chronograph hand. The dial is blue with applied silver Arabic hour numerals, and an outer white dot minute/second scale. Around the perimeter is a fraction-of a second scale on a white reserve, with Arabic numerals every 5-minute/seconds. There are two recessed blue subsidiary dials with white Arabic numerals, markers, and blued indicator hands, including a running small seconds register at 6 o'clock, and a 30-minute chronograph totalizer at 12 o'clock. It's water resistant to 30 meters/100 feet, it has a 44-hour power reserve at full wind, and the 13mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed.

This IWC Portuguese Chronograph IW371491 has a mechanical automatic self-winding caliber 79350 (based on the ETA/Valjoux caliber 7750) movement. It's rhodium plated with oeil-de-perdrix and cotes de Geneve embellishment, and it's constructed with 31 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, and a monometallic balance adjusted to temperature and 5 positions. There is an anti-shock device, a self-compensating flat balance spring, and a hacking seconds mechanism for precision time setting. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz).

The IWC round case design Portuguese watches debuted in 1939 to honor Portugal’s greatest mariner-explorers like Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, and Bartolomeu Dias.
