More about Mare Nostrum Pre Vendome SS Blue Dial

This is a stainless steel Panerai Pre Vendome MARE NOSTRUM 5218-301/A. It has the original blue sharkskin strap with a steel tang buckle, and a scratch resistant sapphire crystal. It has a round-button chronograph and the solid case back is screwed down. The 42mm diameter solid three-body case, flat bezel, and downturned lugs are in original unpolished condition. The wide bezel is engraved with a tachometric scale with 280 units per hour, and "Km/H." The dial is blue with luminous black baton and dot hour markers, and Arabic numerals at the half-hours. It has luminous baton hands and a white center chronograph hand, with an outer minute ring. There is a 30-minute subsidiary dial at 9 o'clock, and a 60-second register at 3 o'clock. It has a power reserve of 42-hours, and the 12mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Panerai Pre Vendome MARE NOSTRUM 5218-301/A has a mechanical manual self-winding Panerai caliber ETA 2801-2 movement fitted with a Dubois Depraz 3127 chronograph module. It's rhodium plated, with "fausses côtes" embellishment. It's constructed with 25 jewels, and a shock absorber mechanism. It includes a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance that's adjusted to 4 positions, and a self-compensating flat balance spring. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz). The original MARE NOSTRUM was the first Panerai chronograph designed for deck officers of the Italian Navy in 1943. Due to the World War II, Mare Nostrum chronographs never went into production and remained at the prototype stage. "Pre-Vendome" watches are extremely rare; they were made between 1993 (when Panerai was an independent company) and 1996/1997, when they were acquired by the Cartier conglomerate (The Vendome Group).
