When the Sun and Moon are aligned on the same or opposite sides of the globe, gravitational forces reinforce each other and cause a very high peak of the tide, a so-called “Spring Tide”. If the moon is located at an angle of ninety degrees from the sun, its gravitation compensates that of the sun and the result is a Neap tide which is an almost even distribution of all the water on earth.
