Description

The Patek Philippe Reference 3448G Perpetual Calendar stands as a pivotal creation in the evolution of horology, famously recognized as the first serial-production automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch. Nicknamed "Disco Volante" or "Flying Saucer" or "Padellone" for its distinctive, avant-garde case profile, the 3448 is an enduring icon that speaks directly to collectors who value rarity and technical innovation. Produced between 1962 and 1981, the entire run produced only approximately 600 pieces, with the white gold (G) variant comprising an even scarcer minority. This particular example, completed in 1972 and delivered according to its Extract from the Archives, exemplifies exemplary preservation—hallmarks on the lugs remain sharp and fully defined, attesting to an untouched case crafted by the esteemed Geneva case maker Antoine Gerlach. The automatic Caliber 27-460 Q beneath its caseback was a mechanical marvel of its era, uniting Patek Philippe’s legendary finishing and perpetual calendar complexity with the convenience of self-winding. The original silver dial is in excellent condition showing appropriate wear for its age. The dial showcases a clean moonphase aperture and French calendar indications. The watch is accompanied by a Patek Philippe box and Extract from the Archives. Measuring 37.5mm in diameter and 11.5mm in thickness, it sits elegantly on the wrist, secured by an 18k white gold pin buckle. The 3448G endures as a vital centerpiece for any collector who values Patek Philippe's peerless legacy of engineering, rarity, and design. A similar example sold in a November 2025 Hong Kong auction for $1.1M USD.
