More about Perpetual Calendar 18K Yellow Gold

This grand complication Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar 5140J is 18K yellow gold, with an automatic movement and functions for day, date, year, month, moonphases, and a 24-hour indicator. The Opaline face has gold applied hour markers and a hearty sapphire crystal. There is a sapphire caseback for viewing the 240 Q movement and an additional, interchangeable solid gold caseback. The ultra-thin mechanical self-winding mechanism has a 22K gold off-center mini-rotor, 27 jewels, 8 bridges, 275 parts, and a Gyromax balance adjusted for cold, heat, isochronism, and 5 positions. It has a free-sprung Breguet balance spring, and the movement vibrates 21,600 times an hour, with a 48-hour power reserve. It's water resistant to 30m and the leather strap has an 18K gold deployant clasp. Patek Philippe made the first perpetual calendar wristwatch in 1925. It adjusted itself for the months with 30 or 28 days, as well as for leap years. It was a masterpiece, and it sold in 1927 to American watch connoisseur, Thomas Emery. The new Patek perpetual calendar mechanisms are superior and the best in the world; the 3940 Perpetual Calendar was introduced in 1985. It was replaced in 2006 with this slightly larger, 37mm 5140. It has a new, taller domed bezel, reducing the crystal edge and making the watch more streamlined. It's also produced in rose and white gold, and platinum.
