Why Collectors Love This

This Rolex reference 1803 is a vintage Day-Date in yellow gold carrying one of the rarest dials Rolex ever made: an oxblood "Stella." The Stella dials were glossy lacquered dials in vivid colours that Rolex produced in small numbers in the 1970s, largely for Middle Eastern markets. Each was built up by hand in many layers of lacquer — a process so demanding that many cracked in the making — and slow sales in period meant few survived, which is why a clean example today is genuinely scarce. The deep red oxblood is among the most restrained and sought-after of the range, set off warmly against the gold. As a Day-Date it spells the day out in full at twelve with the date at three, driven by the automatic, chronometer-rated calibre 1556. The 18k yellow gold case measures 36mm in height and width with a thickness of 12mm, topped by the fluted bezel and a domed acrylic crystal.
