A. Lange & Söhne 231.031 1815 Moonphase Homage to Emil Lange Review

As humans, we’re almost universally drawn to the stars, the moon, and the vastness and mystery of space. As watch collectors, our enthusiasm for time often evolves into a romance with the natural world and the universe. And while a brand like A. Lange & Söhne is often thought of as precise, clinical, and stark (at least on the dial side), the 1815 Moonphase is an example of the brand channeling its more romantic side. 

To up the ante on the sentimentality, this watch was released in 1999 to mark the 150th anniversary of Emil Lange’s birth. Ferdinand Lange was the founder of the brand. Emil Lange, one of Ferdinand’s sons, is largely credited with transforming the brand into an internationally respected watchmaker, guiding it through a period of growth and technical ambition. Under his leadership, Emil Lange expanded into marine chronometers and complicated pocket watches, earning royal commissions that elevated German watchmaking on the global stage. The 1815 Moonphase 'Hommage à Emil Lange' is a fitting tribute to his legacy, offering something charming and unexpectedly different from the traditional brand lineup. 

Produced in a limited run of just 250 pieces in 18k rose gold, the 36mm case is elegant and understated, letting the dial be the star (pun absolutely intended). Against a deep black backdrop, warm rose gold numerals and hands frame the distinctive display. The moonphase is nestled at the bottom left of the dial at the eight o’clock position, just beneath the celestial pattern of the Big Dipper, while at four o’clock, there is a small seconds subdial. 

Beneath the dial beats the manually wound caliber L943.1. Unsurprisingly, it is a beautifully hand-finished movement with painstaking decoration visible through the caseback. This piece also features a rose gold Wellendorff bracelet, making it truly rare and exceptional.

The result is a watch that captures the spirit of its namesake. Emil Lange helped elevate the company to international prominence through innovation and ambition, and this reference honors his legacy by demonstrating that exceptional engineering and a sense of wonder can coexist in a single remarkable watch.
