Overlooked: Charismatic Cartier
Overlooked
Overlooked is your weekly horological treasure hunt — where we dig through the vaults of European Watch Company to spotlight a few quietly brilliant pieces hiding in plain sight. It’s the sleeper hit, the underdog, the “wait, how is this still available?” watch you didn’t know you needed… until now.

Cartier is one of the most celebrated watch brands in the world. They have so many iconic references, such as the Tank and the Santos, as well as a massive catalog filled with interesting case shapes and innovative designs. These four timepieces are all uniquely compelling while also being immediately recognizable as living within Cartier’s design language.
Cartier Tortue Privee Collection W1542751
Cartier's Privé collection is a small capsule collection, released annually, that allows the maison to reinterpret pieces from the brand’s past editions and pull them into the modern era. This Tortue Privee ref. W1542751, introduced during the Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP) era, was released in an edition of 150 pieces, utilizing Cartier’s distinctive Tortue case shape in a 34mm white gold case. It features a silvered dial with contrasting black Roman numerals and the brand’s signature blued hands, both elements that make this watch recognizable as a Cartier. It’s powered by a manually wound movement and has both a date and power reserve display on the beautifully textured dial, making it not only aesthetically pleasing, but discreetly functional.
Cartier Tonneau 89090016
Tonneau is another case shape that is inexorably linked to Cartier, bringing an Art Deco vibe into the contemporary era. This Cartier Tonneau ref. 89090016 is in a 39mm x 21mm curved 18K yellow gold case with a white guilloche-patterned dial and Cartier's signature Roman numerals and blued steel hands. Powered by a manually-wound movement, its elegant proportions and vintage vibes will complement any outfit.
Cartier Vendome 17003
For true lovers of Cartier’s vintage pieces, you really can’t beat the 1970s, when the brand experimented with case designs and came up with slightly funkier styles. This Cartier Vendome ref. 17003 in a 33mm 18K yellow gold case, was referred to as the “jumbo” size at the time because it was the larger of the Vendome cases, and today it is a perfect balance of vintage proportions and contemporary wearability. The bright white dial is contrasted with black Roman numerals, again referencing that classic Cartier design language, and yellow gold hands that complement the case. It’s powered by an automatic movement and is in excellent condition, a true prize for the vintage Cartier aficionado.
Cartier Ronde Louis Cartier WR007002
For those looking for something that’s classic with a twist, this Cartier Ronde Louis Cartier ref. WR007002 may be the perfect option. This piece is bigger than our previous three options at 42mm, and packs some very cool punches, like an 18K white gold case with a bezel beautifully set with diamonds, a silvery-white guilloched dial with those signature Roman numerals and blued hands, and an off-center small seconds between the ten and eleven o’clock positions. It’s powered by a manually-wound movement that’s visible through the sapphire caseback. In like new condition with box and papers, this beauty will make everyone else’s wrist envious.
Cartier has something for everyone, whether you enjoy classic case shapes or something a little off the beaten path. These four compelling examples all offer something unique, but at the same time, distinctly Cartier.
