Overlooked: Glorious Grays
Overlooked
Overlooked is your weekly horological treasure hunt — where we dig through the vaults of European Watch Company to spotlight a few quietly brilliant pieces hiding in plain sight. It’s the sleeper hit, the underdog, the “wait, how is this still available?” watch you didn’t know you needed… until now.

As the grays of winter soften into the brightness of spring, one might take a moment to reflect on the changing of seasons and the passage of time. And what better way to ruminate on the transience of temporality than gazing at the neutral tones of a gray dial? These four examples with dials in subtly differing shades of gray are sure to gratify even the most discerning collector.
Parmigiani PFC907 Tonda PF Gregorian Annual Calendar
Parmigiani Fleurier’s Tonda line is beloved by collectors, from its time-only form up to and including complicated pieces. This Tonda PF Gregorian Annual Calendar, ref. PFC907-1020001-100182, is a stunning example of many of the things collectors love about the brand, such as the grain d’Orge hand-guilloched gray dial, the thoughtful proportions, and the expert execution of a functional complication. In a 42mm case that measures only 11.1mm in thickness, it will slide effortlessly under a cuff, and the stainless steel case and bracelet with knurled platinum bezel make it comfortable and easy to wear with any attire. It’s powered by Parmigiani’s in-house automatic PF339 movement, which has an annual calendar and retrograde date function and a power reserve of 50 hours. The blue aventurine on the moonphase display adds the perfect shimmering touch to an already beautiful dial.
Patek Philippe 6000G Calatrava 18K White Gold
The Calatrava is one of the models where Patek Philippe can show off its mastery of unique displays, and this 6000G Calatrava in 18K white gold is an excellent example. With an anthracite gray sunray dial and date display that is on the outer track, highlighted by a hand tipped with a crescent in bold red, the time and date are incredibly easy to discern with a quick glance. In a very wearable 37mm case size, it’s powered by the brand’s in-house automatic caliber 240, and the movement and its gold micro-rotor are visible through the exhibition caseback. The combination of elegance, functionality, and legibility make this piece an all-around winner.
Jaeger LeCoultre Q1666520 Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Platinum
As we’ve mentioned previously, Jaeger-LeCoultre is often referred to as the “watchmaker’s watchmaker”, and this Q1666520 Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon demonstrates the technical mastery that makes the brand worthy of that sobriquet. Its 43mm platinum case houses the brand’s in-house automatic Calibre JLC 978, which features a tourbillon that’s prominently displayed at the six o’clock position on the dial and a date around the outer track. The soft, understated gray dial complements the platinum case in a delightful demonstration of tone-on-tone subtlety. This model was made in a limited edition of only 200 pieces, so this is a chance to own a very scarce piece of horological artistry.
Laurent Ferrier Annual Calendar Montre Ecole
Laurent Ferrier is one of the most well-known independent brands in the watch industry, known for its quiet elegance and mechanical proficiency. This Montre Ecole Annual Calendar is a demonstration of both qualities, with a beautiful slate gray dial in a 40mm stainless steel Galet case and an in-house manually wound LF126.01 movement. It features an annual calendar with day and month apertures at the twelve o’clock position, a small seconds at the six o’clock position, and a peripheral pointer-date around the outer track. The movement has an 80-hour power reserve and a power reserve display visible on the movement side through the exhibition caseback. It’s a showcase of Laurent Ferrier’s watchmaking capabilities and attention to detail.
Though one might be tempted to spring into the new season with a colorful dial (link to pastel dial story here), an understated gray dial is always in season. Any of these four choices would be a perfect perennial pick.
