Overlooked is your weekly horological treasure hunt — where we dig through the vaults of European Watch Company to spotlight a few quietly brilliant pieces hiding in plain sight. It’s the sleeper hit, the underdog, the “wait, how is this still available?” watch you didn’t know you needed… until now.

It's not really necessary for most people living in the modern age to know the current phase of the moon. For those who work in a maritime industry who may be impacted by tidal forces, or for those who are really interested in werewolf preparedness scenarios, knowing the phase of the moon is pretty important, but for everyone else, it’s more of a nice-to-have option. These four timepieces all include a moonphase aperture on their dials that will make you want to pay rapturous attention to the lunar cycle.

IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Chronograph

There are many brands who make perpetual calendar movements, and IWC is one of the best. The engineering feat that brings together not only a perpetual calendar, a tourbillon, and a chronograph into a 39mm case is a testament to the brand’s technical expertise. This IWC Da Vinci model in 18K yellow gold displays the time, day, date, month, year, and phase of the moon, with chronograph counters seamlessly integrated around the calendar and moonphase subdials. The silvery-white dial ensures legibility, while the elegant articulating lugs ensure a perfect fit on any wrist. The moon at the 12 o’clock position may, in fact, hit your eye like a big pizza pie when the moon is full.

Breguet Classique Moonphase 18K Rose Gold

Breguet is known for having a distinctive man-in-the-moon face displayed on its moonphase complications, and this Classique Moonphase model is no exception. But that’s not all there is to ogle on the dial and 36mm case of this beautiful 18K rose gold timepiece. It features a crisp white enamel dial with a power reserve indicator and a diamond bezel for that little extra sparkle. It’s powered by an automatic Breguet caliber 591 movement, with its beautifully decorated rose gold rotor visible through its sapphire caseback. And the delightful face on the moon at the 12 o’clock position will make you believe they put a man on the moon.

Movado 1881 Automatic Perpetual Calendar

It’s not often that you see a perpetual calendar that is a spectacular value, but we have uncovered a fantastic one: this Movado 1881 Automatic Perpetual Calendar. This piece punches well above its weight, with an 18K yellow gold case and matching gold applied indices and gold subdial rings, and an automatic perpetual calendar function with day, date, month, leap year, and moonphase displays. It packs all of these features into an astonishingly compact 36mm size, giving it significant gravitational pull. But beware: this watch may make you want to start dancing in the moonlight.

Patek Philippe Advanced Research 5450P Annual Calendar

The Patek Philippe Advanced Research 5450P is a horological mic drop. It is a stunning demonstration of the brand’s commitment to technical excellence and innovation. This version, in a limited edition of only 300 pieces, packs a lot of punch into a single package. It’s in a platinum case, which brings some heft to the wrist, and has a salmon dial with applied charcoal-colored numerals, providing contrast and legibility with a subtle edge. It’s powered by the in-house automatic Caliber 324 S IRM QA LU movement, which has a Gyromax balance and Spiromax balance spring, a frequency of 28,800 vph, and annual calendar and moonphase complications. This model is delivered sealed, with its original box and papers, enough to make you want to play among the stars.

The moonphase complication, while not a practical one for most, can be both romantic and a little bit nerdy. Wearing any of these timepieces will help clue you in to the best time to gaze up at the night sky, or maybe, when to bark at the moon.
