When Patek Philippe unveiled the Cubitus in October 2024, it marked the brand’s first new collection in 25 years. The Cubitus’ square case with cut-off corners quickly became the talk of the watch industry. Some loved the design, while others hated it, but all recognized the significance of a new Patek Philippe collection, and it seemed like everyone had a hot take.

This Cubitus model, Reference 5821/1A, is one of the three initial references that were presented to launch the collection. In a stainless steel case with a beautiful green sunburst dial, it is the simplest manifestation of the unique language of the Cubitus.

At first glance, this piece seems like a continuation of the 5711-1A/014, released with the same engraved teak dial motif and finish. Both pieces feature the same design language on the integrated stainless steel bracelet with brushed outer and polished center links. The pieces share the same handset and index styling, framed date window, screw-down crown, “eared” case design, and even the same automatic movement.

But this is where the similarities end. Like two siblings descending from the same parent with slightly different idiosyncrasies, the Cubitus and Nautilus have decidedly distinct personalities. The Cubitus case measures 45mm diagonally, yet it wears surprisingly compactly, even on smaller wrists. The square case has faceted corners, effectively making it octagonal, and the dial is cut to match the profile of the bezel. The piece also has an improved butterfly clasp allowing for on-the-fly adjustments.

The Cubitus is one of those watches that may just surprise you in person. While some collectors initially questioned its place in Patek’s lineup, many had that “I get it now” lightbulb moment when they tried this piece on in the metal.

Svelte at just 8.3mm thick, and bearing all the beautiful finishing details that have made Patek Philippe one of the most respected names in the watch industry, the Cubitus is arguably Patek Philippe’s biggest move in the last 10 years. We can’t wait to see what comes next from the collection!
