Why Collectors Love This

This Patek Philippe reference 5070G is the white gold version of the watch that brought the simple chronograph back to Patek Philippe. When the 5070 arrived in 1998 it was the maison's first calendar-free chronograph in some three decades — the plain chronograph had been absent from the catalogue since the reference 1463 ended in the 1960s — and its 42mm case was strikingly large by Patek's standards of the day, both of which have made it one of the most collectible modern Patek chronographs. Driving it is the manually wound calibre CH 27-70, a column-wheel chronograph built on the celebrated Lemania 2310 base and finished to Patek's highest level; as the last Patek chronograph to use this revered movement, the 5070 is especially sought after among collectors. The 18k white gold case measures 42mm in height and width with a thickness of 11.6mm, its stepped profile and rectangular pushers giving real presence while staying refined. The silvered dial carries applied Arabic numerals, a tachymeter scale and twin registers at three and nine.
