Breguet 3050BA Classique Perpetual Calendar Review
Published on 7/17/2026

Features that are considered purely decorative flourishes in watchmaking today were once practical necessities. The use of guilloché improved legibility by adding depth to the dial. The process of bluing steel for watch hands strengthened the underlying material. And the tourbillon counteracted the effects of gravity on timekeeping accuracy.
What do these horological details have in common? They were all developed, or at the very least refined, by Abraham-Louis Breguet, who is considered one of the greatest watchmakers of not only his era but of all time. He founded his eponymous maison in 1775, and some of the greatest mechanical marvels in watchmaking have emerged from it in the ensuing centuries. The Reference 3050BA ranks among the most collectible Breguets because it showcases what the maison has done best: combining restrained elegance with a compact perpetual calendar and moonphase.
The neo-vintage 3050BA Classique was introduced during the brand's revival period in the late 1980s, a difficult era for the Swiss watchmaking industry, but especially for such a historical brand that vowed never to make anything but mechanical watches. It’s housed in a compact 36mm 18K yellow gold case, which is enhanced by coin-edge finishing on the sides. The caliber 505QP3 automatic movement is an achievement, packing a perpetual calendar into a case just 8mm thick. The moonphase resides in a fitting half-moon sundial at the six o’clock position, and at the top of the dial, Breguet emphasized the first, second, third, and leap years within the 12-month indicator.
The visual style defined by the 3050BA is characteristically Breguet, and features iconic blued pomme hands (also known as Breguet hands), Roman numerals, and Clous de Paris guilloché finishing across its solid gold and galvanized silver dial.
Breguet marked its semiquincentennial in 2025, a remarkable achievement for any brand, especially one making watches at this level of complication and finishing. When the earliest Reference 3050BAs were released, perpetual calendars were seen as the last bastion of intricate mechanical watchmaking. According to Francois Bodet, Breguet’s director at the time, just 2 or 3 perpetual calendars were made each year, because a single watch required thirty distinct watchmaking professions. Forty years later, and more than 250 years after its founding, Breguet still keeps the perpetual calendar alive.
