Overlooked is your weekly horological treasure hunt — where we dig through the vaults of European Watch Company to spotlight a few quietly brilliant pieces hiding in plain sight. It’s the sleeper hit, the underdog, the “wait, how is this still available?” watch you didn’t know you needed… until now.

Trends in watches come and go, but there’s one theme that seems to be a perennial favorite: blue dials. Whether they’re a simple single shade of lacquer, a brushed sunburst texture, or an artistic pattern, blue dials are at home in any type of watch, from sporty to dress. And though blue is technically not a neutral, it can seem that way, whether it’s a reflection of the color of the sky or the sea. These four pieces are great examples of different expressions of blue dials, all with something a little special.

Rolex Day-Date President 18K White Gold Blue Wave Dial

The Rolex Day-Date is an iconic reference, and this version, ref. 118239, has something a little extra special: the blue wave-motif dial. It’s housed in a 36mm 18K white gold Oyster case with classic features like a fluted bezel, sapphire Crystal with Cyclops magnifier over the date window, and a screw-down Twinlock crown that helps achieve its 100m water resistance, and the white gold President bracelet makes for a comfortable wearing experience. It’s powered by the in-house automatic Calibre 3155, a COSC-certified chronometer with a 48-hour power reserve. The true star of the show is the dial, with multiple shades of blue in a brushed metallic gradient and artistic blue wave motif that’s sure to evoke memories of the ocean.

Breguet Marine Titanium Blue Dial

Love the classic look of Breguet, but want something a little sportier? Look no further than this Breguet Marine 5517TI/Y1/TZ0, which blends the brand’s nautical heritage with modern engineering. The 40mm case and matching titanium bracelet make this piece supremely lightweight and comfortable, while the rich blue sunburst dial with luminescent applied indices makes it both legible and beautiful. It’s powered by the in-house automatic caliber 777A, which has a silicon balance spring for magnetic resistance and is visible through the exhibition caseback. With its nods to the brand’s marine chronometry roots, such as the counterbalance on the seconds hand with a Maritime signal flag with the Breguet initial and the crown surrounded by decoration in the form of waves, the combination of heritage and modern materials appropriate on the sea or in the office.

Tudor Black Bay 58 SS "Inter Milan" Blue Dial

Tudor’s Black Bay 58 is a hit in their catalogue for several reasons - vintage-inspired design, a comfortable 39mm stainless steel case, and a robust COSC-certified chronometer movement. This version, the M79030N-0025, a limited edition of only 1,908 numbered pieces created to celebrate football club Inter Milan’s second star, has something extra: a beautiful blue dial with the legendary club’s logo and its two stars displayed at the six o’clock position. But you don’t have to be a soccer fan to enjoy this watch’s vintage dive watch proportions and its in-house Calibre MT5402, which is COSC-certified and has a 70 hour power reserve. This piece comes with both a steel bracelet and one of Tudor’s legendary woven jacquard fabric straps with a stripe in Inter Milan’s signature blue and is in like new condition with box and papers.

Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Annual Chronograph SS Blue Dial

If you like your marine chronometry with a side of flair and contemporary design, you’ll enjoy this Ulysse Nardin 1533-320LE-3A-175 Marine Torpilleur Annual Chronograph. It features both a column-wheel chronograph and an annual calendar complication, a rare combination at this price point. It’s powered by the in-house automatic Caliber UN-153, visible through the exhibition caseback, with a power reserve of 53 hours, a silicon escapement, and hours, minutes, date, chronograph, and annual calendar functions. The gorgeous blue dial reflects the brand’s history of nautical tradition, while the white Roman numerals provide easy legibility. Its 42mm stainless steel case paired with a dark blue alligator strap provides comfortable wear, whether you’re sailing or on land.

These four blue dial examples have some similarities, but provide wildly different styles, sizes, and design aesthetics. If you follow the clues, you’ll find your favorite.
