Overlooked: Phenomenal Patek Philippe Perpetuals
Overlooked
Overlooked is your weekly horological treasure hunt — where we dig through the vaults of European Watch Company to spotlight a few quietly brilliant pieces hiding in plain sight. It’s the sleeper hit, the underdog, the “wait, how is this still available?” watch you didn’t know you needed… until now.

Patek Philippe perpetual calendar models are some of the most sought-after pieces in the brand’s catalogue. They’re also notoriously hard to obtain, making some pieces true holy grails for collectors. These three absolutely exceptional and rare perpetual calendars by Patek Philippe are some of the rarest examples of these phenomenal achievements in high horology.
Patek Philippe 5039R Perpetual Calendar Unique Piece
Ref. 5039 is considered a modern classic among collectors, with elegant proportions and, of course, impeccable attention to detail in the construction and finishing. This ref. 5039R-013 is a stunning example, with a gorgeous brown dial that warmly complements the 18K rose gold case with its Clous de Paris (hobnail) bezel. Its very wearable 35mm case diameter contributes to that classic feel, and its luminous hands and hour markers bring legibility without sacrificing elegance. It’s powered by Patek’s ultra-thin automatic Caliber 240 Q, which has all of the features of a perpetual calendar, with day, date, month, leap year, 24-hour indicator, and a moon phase display. All of this is achieved with a case thickness of only 9mm, thanks to the micro-rotor in the movement.
Patek Philippe 5039J Perpetual Calendar Unique Piece
Another example of the iconic 5039, this ref. 5039J-018 provides the same elegant proportions and subtly luxurious details as the previous piece in a stunning and exceedingly rare combination of 18K yellow gold with a black Arabic dial. The luminous markers and hands provide exceptional legibility and contrast, while the astonishingly thin 9mm case thickness and 35mm case diameter provide wearability on any wrist size. It’s powered by the in-house ultra-thin automatic Caliber 240 Q, with day, date, month, leap year, 24-hour indicator, and a moon phase display, a reliable and accurate movement that’s considered legendary amongst horological connoisseurs.

Both of the ref. 5039 pieces featured bear the initials "MSO" at the six o'clock position, indicating that they were part of the extensive and unique collection of Michael Ovitz, the cofounder of Creative Artists Agency (CAA), an avid collector of both watches and artwork.
Patek Philippe 3970J Perpetual Calendar Chronograph
The Patek Philippe 3970 is one of the most storied perpetual calendar references in the brand’s history, reflecting a journey in reference and movement development as a successor to the ref. 2499. This 3970J is an excellent example of this coveted reference, with a 36mm 18K yellow gold case that perfectly contrasts the silvery-white of the dial. It’s powered by the in-house manually wound CH 27-70 Q movement, which has not only a perpetual calendar, but a chronograph function as well. Of note to collectors, the 3970J is the final fully hand-finished perpetual calendar before the advent of computer-assisted manufacturing, further contributing to its legendary status. The balanced dial layout and gold hands and dial markers make this a watch that will make you smile every time you glance at your wrist.
These three exceptionally rare examples of Patek Philippe’s legendary history with perpetual calendar references are a collector’s dream. Any of these three pieces would be the crowning glory of an aficionado’s collection.
