Rolex is Rolex is Rolex… Or so they say. To many, this is a brand that knows what it is, and generally sticks conservatively to that self-image. The thing is, Rolex sometimes pushes its own boundaries, like with this very fun Rolex 36mm Datejust Green Palm Motif Dial on jubilee bracelet. The whimsical dial really adds a different dynamic to an otherwise incredibly classic timepiece. The “Jungle Datejust,” as some collectors call it, is still on-brand. Rolex has a storied history of exploration in their DNA, as well as a knack for occasionally cranking out pieces with unorthodox dials and/or gem settings.
History
The Datejust has been a part of the Rolex lineup for about three-fourths of a century. It was initially launched to celebrate Rolex’s 40th anniversary as a brand in 1945. This first version was only available as a 36mm in yellow gold featuring a fluted bezel and the first showing of the jubilee bracelet, hence the name “Jubilee.” This watch was also significant because it was the first-ever waterproof automatic watch with a date window. The first appearance of the cyclops date window was in 1953, and it is still used in all current Datejust references. Since then, there have been many variations, including sizes, materials, dials, bezels, etc. In 2018, Rolex updated the calibers to the current 3235 used in these Datejust models today. This model with the palm motif was released in 2021 alongside a few variations, including two other colors of the palm motif, one in silver for the rose gold two-tone option and the other in gold for the yellow gold two-tone version. All of these are still currently available options.
Design Details
The design of this watch has been a timeless perfection, but the dial of this model sets this one apart. It has a metallic laser-etched palm motif that sports three shades of green, where the leaves are either a light or dark color with an almost matt finish on top of the green sunburst. The entire pattern is quite asymmetrical, and each layer catches the light differently depending on the angle. This version features the combination of polished steel 36mm case and the white gold fluted bezel on the 5-link jubilee bracelet. The bracelet has shorter alternating inner links with a high polish, with the external links having a brushed finish. The winding crown also has a fluted design, with the Rolex logo embossed into the top of the crown. Together all of these angles, shapes, and finishes give this timepiece an incredible play on the light as it hits each feature. Even with all of this going on, the watch is effortless to read. The crisp whiteness of the Chromalight blue lume on the white gold hands and indices, as well as the white background of the cyclops date, are the main reasons for this legibility.
Inner Workings
The Caliber 3235 is a robust and reliable movement developed and manufactured entirely by Rolex. The caliber features 31 jewels and a 70-hour power reserve with a bi-directional winding rotor. It is quite shock-resistant — which adds to the movement’s durability — and anti-magnetic, which improves its reliability. Rolex employs its patented Chronergy system to this caliber, which primarily incorporates a new type of escapement that is much more efficient and allows for higher frequency without loss of power reserve. This escapement is made from a nickel-phosphorus material that cannot be magnetized. The movement is COSC-certified; however, Rolex tests beyond that, ensuring that this movement reaches a -/2+2 seconds a day accuracy even when cased.
Versus The Competition
A very interesting timepiece to compare to this Datejust is the Grand Seiko Elegance SHOSHO Summer Hi-Beat 36000 GMT. The Grand Seiko, in general, is a fantastic brand to be compared to Rolex. It may not have the same public awareness or maybe the same prestige currently; however, it does an exceptional job holding its own in the ring. Grand Seiko is known for its outstanding dial working, as seen in this Summer edition of the Elegance. The wave light pattern on this light blue dial looks almost like water moving in the ocean, much like the palm dial of the Rolex makes one feel as though they are looking into the jungle. Another highly comparable factor is Grand Seiko’s pursuit of the highest quality in their movements. This timepiece beats at 36,000 vph, has a 55-hour power reserve, and has an accuracy of +5/-3 seconds a day. The Grand Seiko makes a strong argument that many watch collectors currently appreciate.
Personality
This is an appealing Rolex as it will connect with many different collectors for varying reasons. This dial offers something unique and different to the lineup for prominent Rolex collectors. Something fun and interesting compared to the more conservative Rolex models. It just as easily could be a piece that attracts the attention of a new watch enthusiast looking to start their Rolex collection. This particular model could be very attractive to collectors who do not even normally look at the Rolex catalog. It is a piece that could find a perfect spot in any aficionado’s collection.
Final Thoughts
Whether collectors like it or not, this Rolex Datejust is a fun but still classy timepiece. It could be unique for the ages or perhaps lead to the brand introducing many more irregular dials. It is very traditional as it’s the original size and styling of the Datejust, but with a new and fresh aesthetic.
