Dedicated to protecting the timepieces, jewels, and treasures that matter most, Wrist Assured is your monthly insider’s guide: the place where we break down everything you need to know about insuring, safeguarding, and servicing your collection. Because luxury is more than what you wear—it’s what you protect.

If you’re like most collectors, your watches and valuables live a real life: they ride along on school runs, get set down on the dresser after a long day, and sometimes stay home when you head out of town. A good safe isn’t about paranoia, it’s about peace. It’s about knowing that while life keeps moving (kids, dogs, delivery people, dinner parties), your favorite pieces are exactly where you left them.

This guide aims to provide a clear set of answers to a simple question: What actually keeps my watches safe from fire and break-ins without turning my home into a vault?

We’ll walk you through the few ratings that matter, show you what real-world setups look like (from “tuck it in the closet” to “make it part of the room”), and help you pick something you’ll use every day, keeping in mind lifestyle, style and ultimately, practicality.

You don’t need to become a security expert. You just need the right container, in the right spot, with the right basics. We’ll get you there.

STEP 1: THE ONLY TWO LABELS THAT MATTER

Think of a safe like a jacket with two ratings: one for heat, one for break-ins.

Fire rating = how long the inside stays cool in a blaze.

The fire rating is determined by how long the safe can withstand prolonged exposure to fire. Fire ratings indicate how long a safe maintains an internal temperature below 350°F when exposed to external flames. A two-hour rating at 1850°F provides substantial protection for both documents and delicate watch movements. These ratings typically span 30-, 60-, 90-, and 120-minute durations. In areas with increased chances of wildfire, a higher rating may be recommended.

Burglary rating = how long it resists a tool attack. Here’s the decoder ring:

Class B and C Ratings represent construction standards rather than tested performance. A Class B safe features a ½-inch solid steel door and ¼-inch walls. Class C doubles down with a 1-inch door and ½-inch body, providing roughly twice the penetration protection. Class C safes are an excellent choice for typical home watch and jewelry collections. Additionally, safes need to be either mounted or weigh over 750 pounds to be adequately secured.

TL-15 Rating marks where serious protection begins for high-value collections. This UL-certified rating guarantees the safe withstands 15 minutes of concentrated attack by professional safecrackers using specialized tools, with full knowledge of the safe's construction. Since TL-15 rated safes have much thicker walls and doors, they are often much heavier, making the safe even more challenging to remove from the premises. TL-15 rated safes are usually preferred by most underwriters and recommended as the bare minimum for any high-value collection.

TL-30 Rating doubles the tested resistance time to 30 minutes against professional assault. These fortresses often feature twice the steel thickness of TL-15 models, along with additional countermeasures such as hardened plates and relockers. The TL-30 safe is rarely needed in a home setting, but it is an added peace of mind for even the most robust home collections.

TL-30X6 Rating extends TL-30 protection to all six sides of the safe, not just the door, which is essential for safes that might be accessed from multiple angles.

Cat’s Recommendation: For smaller collections, a Class B or C safe is a great start. If your collection is going to grow more or if you have a larger collection, go for the TL-15 safe with at least a 60-minute fire rating. Unless you mount it, it’s not doing its job correctly.

STEP 2: CHOOSE YOUR STYLE - Introductory, Custom, or Luxury

INTRODUCTORY: Professional-grade security, without the fuss of aesthetics.

American Security (AMSEC) Safes offer a wide range of TL-rated safes that come with a standard 120-minute fire rating. The CEV line offers a variety of sizes, and the compact MAX1014 provides a compact, high-security solution. Both lines offer a digital pin-pad lock with “6-10 massive 1.5” diameter chrome-plated solid steel locking bolts.” In terms of warranty, AMSEC offers warranty coverage on all safes over 55” if damage is due to an attempted burglary or fire damage. AMSEC TL-15 from $2,200.

Inkas High-Security Safes offer a wide range of TL-rated safes for extensive jewelry collections. The Inkas Titan model is the TL-15 version and is available in various shapes and sizes. Featuring a 120-minute fire rating, UL-rated digital keypad lock, solid steel locking bolts, and a combination of solid steel and concrete walls, the TITAN is a force to be reckoned with (for even the most seasoned thieves). Inkas TL-15 from $1,700.

To summarize: Both American Security and INKAS offer state of the art safes with excellent protection against burglary and fire. They offer a variety of options which can be customized to different homes’ needs. For further customization, look into watch winders or jewelry trays that can be inserted into these safes.

Who it suits: The family that likes to keep their collection discreet and safe

CUSTOM: Tailored to your collection.

Casoro Jewelry Safes offers both ready-to-ship and custom safe solutions tailored to both watch and jewelry collections. With a little more of an aesthetic touch, a custom Casoro safe is an interior designer and insurance underwriter’s dream. While the TL-15 rated safes are not also fire-rated, the TL-30 version is fire-rated for up to 120-minutes. Casoro offers both ready-to-ship and custom-made safes. The Kairos and Gemstone lines are perfect for watch and jewelry collections, and the interior can be customized with watch winders and drawers with watch pillows. Casoro Safes are the perfect compromise for finding a safe that is both secure and can be seamlessly integrated into an existing design or aesthetic. Casoro Kairos from $21,000.

Brown Safe Company offers custom safes built with the highest levels of security and customization. Their UL burglary ratings start at Class B and range up to TL-30. The Estate Series is the most versatile safe, offering customization for watches, jewelry, documents, and other valuables that typically belong in a safe. The Gem is built for jewelry and customizable in both UL-bulgary and UL-fire ratings. The Man Safe and Chronos options are built for watch collectors, and programmable winders are included in these models. Existing Chubb customers are eligible for benefits when choosing Brown Safe for their next safe. Brown Safes from $10,000.

To summarize: Casoro and Brown focus on customization, which allows you to pick your security rating, fire protection, and how it looks internally and externally. Both companies offer models with watch winders and jewelry drawers integrated.

Who it suits: The collectors who wear a different watch every day and want their collection to be organized and accessible. These safes would look wonderful in a master suite closet system or in a home office.

LUXURY: Meant for show.

Buben & Zorweg Safes are hand-crafted and engineered in Germany. They offer a variety of styles and aesthetics for those seeking a unique way to store their watch and jewelry collections. They even offer an entire Private Museum Safe installation, which transforms the home into a museum-worthy exhibition. The Galaxy model is the most discreet option, resembling a traditional cabinet and featuring a discreet opening method. This would be an excellent choice for a home office. Buben & Zorweg offer luxury and secure storage that can be personalized to the most robust collections. As a German-made product, Buben & Zorweg safes follow a different type of rating, VdS, which is similar to EN and UL designations. Before purchasing a Buben & Zorweg safe, it is essential to consult with your insurance agent to discuss any specific requirements for your safe. Buben & Zorweg Safes from $87,000.

Döttling Luxury Safes are another example of the intersection of German craftsmanship and high-security safes. The Bel-Air is inspired by vintage trunks, offering high-security storage for collections and featuring watch winders and jewelry drawers. The Wallmaster is a wall-safe that has a glass front wall. The front glass can be transparent or blacked out. Perhaps the crème de la crème of luxury safes is the Grand Circle, designed for those who love to appreciate their collection but want to keep it safe. Döttling offers a variety of unique and secure safes perfect for when the custom safes just don’t cut it. The Döttling safes also use VdS/EN certifications. If considering a Döttling safe, be sure to check with your insurance agent to ensure the safe meets the requirements of your policy. Döttling Safes from $67,000.

To summarize: If you’re looking for a safe that offers excellent security AND will be a conversation starter, German brands Buben & Zorweg and Döttling are excellent choices. German brands are made to European standards, so check with your insurance carrier before purchasing one.

Who it suits: Your safe is designed to be seen without compromising on security.

STEP 3: PLACE IT, BOLT IT, ALARM IT

  • Location. Think about traffic in your home and how often you’d like to access the safe. Choose a secure location with this in mind.

  • Anchor it.  Even the heaviest safes can be moved. Bolting your safe to the floor or wall helps ensure your safe performs as it should. Direct any questions to the safe professionals who will install the safe.

  • Zone it. Install a seismic vibration sensor to ensure the safe is not tampered with while the home is alarmed. If your alarm tends to stay off but you maintain heavy traffic in the house, consider having a separate zone installed so that the safe stays alarmed at all times.

Cat’s Recommendation: A good safe is only secure if it’s used the way it was intended: anchored and locked. If you have an alarm system, why not add an extra layer of peace of mind with a seismic vibration sensor or a separate zone?

STEP 4: INSURANCE THAT ACTUALLY HELPS

  • Many carriers will encourage and even reward clients who secure their collections in TL-15 rated safes. Some require it after a particular value has been reached.

  • Consider a Valuable Personal Articles policy to schedule and cover your entire collection against burglary and fire. As much as we can prepare for the worst with a safe and alarm system, insurance is the ultimate peace of mind.

Quick Buying Checklist (save this for later)

  1. Burglary: UL-rated Class B or C for your beginner collectors, TL-15 for those who are serious about keeping their collection safe.

  2. Fire: Aim for at least 60 minutes, but 120 minutes offers the utmost protection

  3. Interior: Consider personalizing with watch winders and jewelry trays, or choose a custom build for ultimate freedom

  4. Install: Anchored to the ground, connected to the alarm, and don’t leave the emergency key on top of the safe.

  5. Insurance: Confirm your carrier’s requirements before purchasing; you may also be eligible for an additional discount on your premium!

Example Set-Ups

  • Quiet luxury couple: The AMSEC TL-15 rated safe is mounted and located in a basement storage room. Whatever is not worn is always stored in the safe, and they have an alarm sensor on the door leading into the storage room.

  • Design-driven, on-the-go family: The Casoro Emerald TL-30 2-Hour fire-rated safe, bolted to the sub-floor, seamlessly fitted to the built-in closet system. This allows their collection to be an extension of their closet while remaining extra secure.

  • City collector: The Brown Safe Ultra Gem 2418 is concealed in a low-traffic closet and protected by a seismic vibration sensor. Consider adding a faux wall or fixture to cover the safe.

  • The Proud Connoisseur: lives in a gated home in a low-traffic neighborhood and has the Döttling Wallmaster installed. When he is entertaining, he can display his collection without even needing to unlock the safe.

The Bottom Line

Your watch display case is not safe, even if it locks. It’s 2025, burglars are intelligent, but you need to be smarter. Choose a safe with real burglary and fire ratings, anchor and alarm it, and then insure the contents. There’s no sense in investing in these wonderful horological pieces of art if they’re sitting out waiting to be stolen. In a world where replacing a grail can be impossible, even with a payout, the right safe isn’t décor. It’s part of the collection.
