This Kari Voutilainen Vingt-8 brings the watchmaker's signature model into steel, an unusual case metal for a reference customarily made in gold or platinum, and a quietly assured choice for the collector who already knows the model well. It is powered by the manually wound calibre 28, developed entirely in-house at Môtiers and visible through the display caseback. Its direct impulse escapement works through two escape wheels to a large free-sprung balance beating at a traditional 18,000 vibrations per hour, which pairs a Breguet overcoil with the little-used Grossmann inner curve. The stainless steel case measures 39 mm by 39 mm with a thickness of 11.5 mm, its sculpted teardrop lugs giving a classical dress watch genuine presence. The blue dial is engine-turned by hand at Comblémine, Voutilainen's own dial workshop, and the cooler tone of steel draws the eye to every line of the guilloché. The Vingt-8 placed Voutilainen, a watchmaker with more than half a dozen GPHG prizes to his name, among the few independents with a fully in-house calibre, and in steel it becomes a rare, understated reading of a modern classic.
