Description
The Patek Philippe Reference 3580A, often called the Jumbo UFO by collectors, is one of the brand's more unusual shaped watches from the 1970s. Produced in a relatively short run, generally associated with the 1971 to 1980 period, it shows a different side of Patek Philippe: bolder case design, handled with the restraint and finish collectors expect from the manufacture. Its 35 mm by 40 mm stainless steel case wears with real presence on the wrist. The hidden crown, set into the caseback, gives the watch its clean profile and makes the reference immediately recognizable. That back winder layout is rare for Patek Philippe and a large part of this model's appeal. The blue dial suits the design particularly well, adding color and depth to the elliptical cushion case. Inside is the self-winding Caliber 350, a slim automatic movement known for dependable performance and elegant construction. Collectors are drawn to the 3580A for both its shape and its material. Steel Patek Philippe watches from this era are scarce, and this reference sits in a compelling middle ground: dress-oriented in scale and finish, but distinctly more expressive than a conventional round case. Examples with the blue dial are especially desirable, as they show the model at its most distinctive. For the seasoned buyer, the Ref. 3580A is a rare vintage Patek Philippe with a clear point of view. The back winder case, stainless steel construction, and sculptural 1970s profile give it a character all its own.
