Description
The Patek Philippe Reference 5040J pairs the brand's ultra-thin perpetual calendar architecture with a tonneau case in 18K yellow gold. Introduced in 1992, it was Patek Philippe's first tortue-style perpetual calendar wristwatch, giving this well-known complication a more sculptural, formal shape than the round 3940. This example has a silver dial with applied Breguet numerals, a combination that suits the watch's classical design while keeping the calendar displays clear and well balanced. Inside is the automatic Caliber 240 Q, one of Patek Philippe's defining self-winding movements. Its micro-rotor construction allows for slim proportions without sacrificing the full perpetual calendar display: day, date, month, leap year, 24-hour indication, and moonphase. In yellow gold, the 5040J has a warmer, more traditional feel than other versions of the reference, and the case shape gives it a distinct presence on the wrist. Collectors continue to seek out the 5040 for that combination of form and mechanics, especially within the context of Patek Philippe's 1990s complicated watches, a period known for restraint, proportion, and quiet sophistication. The reference was not a limited edition and was not made for a specific country or boutique. Its appeal comes from the watch itself: the shaped case, the caliber, and the relative rarity of the model on today's market. For buyers drawn to ultra-thin perpetual calendars and classical Patek Philippe design, the 5040J is a particularly compelling example. Like New with Patek Philippe box, travel pouch and Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives dated 1994. Includes Patek Philippe service papers dated 2025.
