Description
The Rolex Submariner reference 5512 is one of the foundational references in the evolution of the modern dive watch, introduced in 1959 and celebrated for bringing crown guards and a larger 40mm Oyster case to the line. This particular configuration, with its gilt chapter ring dial, pointed crown guards, and exclamation point luminous plot above 6 oclock, sits among the most desirable early examples and is generally associated with the early 1960s. The glossy black gilt dial is especially important to collectors, as the closed chapter ring layout and exclamation detail mark a short-lived transitional period in Rolex production. Reference 5512 also holds mechanical significance within the Submariner family because it was the chronometer-rated sibling to the 5513, and early examples are associated with Rolex caliber 1530 before later production moved to caliber 1560 and subsequently 1570. Its stainless steel Oyster case established the enduring Submariner profile, balancing tool-watch utility with the restrained proportions that define vintage Rolex sport models. The pointed crown guard case, often called PCG by collectors, was produced only for a limited window and remains one of the most scrutinized and valued case forms in the vintage market. As a no-date Submariner, the 5512 preserves the purity of the original design language, with a clean black dial, rotating timing bezel, and highly legible underwater-oriented display. Watches with gilt exclamation dials have become especially compelling to seasoned buyers because they combine rarity, visual warmth, and period-correct nuance in a way later matte dial examples do not. More than simply an early Submariner, the 5512 is a landmark Rolex sports reference whose best surviving dial variants occupy an important place in serious vintage collections. Excellent Condition with Rolex service papers dated 1964.
