Breguet Tradition 7047PT Fusee Tourbillon Platinum Review

There are few names in watchmaking that carry as much historical weight as Breguet. Abraham-Louis Breguet spent much of his career finding ways to improve mechanical timekeeping. After returning to Paris from Switzerland in 1795, he developed his montres de souscription; simple subscription watches intended to reach larger audiences. These large, single-handed pocket watches featured straightforward, symmetrical movements built around a prominent central barrel. This mechanical arrangement established a movement architecture that Breguet as a brand would revisit more than two centuries later.

Introduced in 2005, the Tradition collection turns that architecture inside out, moving most of the movement onto the dial side for the wearer to enjoy. The platinum Tradition 7047 Fusée Tourbillon takes the concept a considerable leap further. Instead of simply referencing Breguet’s past aesthetically, it puts some of the master watchmaker’s greatest achievements on full display. 

Its hand-wound Calibre 569 is a beast, mechanically speaking. It’s composed of 542 parts, 43 jewels, and beats at 2.5 Hz, providing a 50-hour power reserve. Dominating the right side is a fusée-and-chain transmission, a centuries-old solution to one of mechanical watchmaking’s fundamental problems. A mainspring delivers greater force when fully wound and less as it unwinds. In essence, a watch's accuracy decreases as you run lower on power. The fusée compensates for the decline in torque through changing leverage, helping provide the movement with a more consistent flow of energy whether it’s fully wound or about to run out of power.

Then there is Breguet’s greatest timekeeping celebrity: the tourbillon. Patented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801, it places the regulating organs inside a rotating cage to counteract positional and gravitational effects on beat rate. Here, the one-minute tourbillon uses an enormous 17mm titanium cage and 13mm titanium balance wheel, with its architecture drawing directly from Breguet’s earliest designs.

Yet the 7047 isn’t just honoring the past; it’s embracing the present. Titanium sits alongside silicon components in the escapement, fusing history’s best watchmaking solutions with modern materials. That combination is what makes the 7047 compelling; it demonstrates that the ideas and mechanical ingenuity of the past can still be improved upon without neglecting their traditions.
