Piaget Black Tie Vintage Inspiration "Andy Warhol" ref. GOA43236 Review
Published on 6/27/2026

If any brand can make a watch feel as if it's escaped from a gallery wall and wandered into Studio 54, it’s Piaget. The Piaget Andy Warhol in 18K rose gold with a blue lapis dial is, like many of the brand’s elegant watches, a masterpiece that marries the worlds of watchmaking and jewelry. Wearing it feels like stepping into a technicolor pop-art fever dream; one where bold shapes, super-saturation, and 1970s glitz are encouraged. To many, a piece like this may feel as if it’s “too much,” yet this is nothing some natural charisma and creativity couldn’t tame.
The design’s roots lie in Piaget's Black Tie collection, one of the most distinctive watch families to emerge from the brand's wild ‘70s era, a time when being “a bit extra” was strongly encouraged. While earlier Black Tie models appeared in various forms, the stepped cushion case that we see in this iteration was introduced in 1972 alongside the groundbreaking Beta 21 movement: the first commercially available Swiss quartz movement. The watch became a favorite among artists and celebrities, none more famous than Andy Warhol himself, who reportedly owned several Piaget watches and helped cement the model's place in design history after acquiring his first in 1973. Piaget has now embraced the connection by naming the latest releases of this watch “Andy Warhol” after the pop-art icon.
This 2018 example preserves everything that made the original unforgettable. The broad 45mm by 43mm rose gold case keeps the unmistakable architectural presence, with stepped gadroons (your word of the day) radiating outward like steps leading up to an altar, or a hip disco dance floor. The dance floor in question: a vivid blue lapis lazuli dial. Piaget has a storied history of treating stone dials as art rather than a decorative afterthought. The golden flecks in the lapis dial are naturally occurring pyrite, creating a shimmer across the surface like distant stars.
Inside, however, the watch replaced the historic Beta 21 with Piaget's ultra-thin automatic caliber 501P, an in-house movement that keeps the profile slim while providing some important mechanical credentials. The result is a watch that feels excessive in appearance yet delightful in its ‘70s bling bling.
Restraint, class, and some artsy optimism make this watch captivating more than 50 years after the original reference was released.
