Why Collectors Love This

This A. Lange & Söhne 701.005 places its owner at the very beginning of the modern firm's story, the flagship of the four watches that announced its revival and the first wristwatch ever to unite a tourbillon with a fusée-and-chain transmission. The hand-wound caliber L902.0, developed with Renaud & Papi, carries a one-minute tourbillon beneath a diamond endstone, with a fusée-and-chain transmission that occupies close to half the calibre. The platinum case measures 38.5 by 38.5 by 10mm, compact and quietly worn, letting the mechanical ambition sit in the movement rather than the profile. A solid silver dial keeps the front deliberately plain, faithful to the pocket-watch language that shaped the early collection. Produced in platinum in only 50 examples and named for one of Germany's highest orders of merit, it is the piece that founded the Pour le Mérite line and staked Lange's claim to the front rank of high horology.
